“I always found these fairs very exciting – so I decided to trade books and catalogues, graphics and ephemera myself.”
Stader Kunst Buch Kabinett run by Michael Schleicher is an antiquarian bookshop located in the historic town of Stade in northern Germany, and specialises in art books of the avant-garde from the early 20th century. Michael’s interest in the rare book world began in 1983 whilst visiting a Jawlensky exhibition where he first began collecting early exhibition art catalogues of modern European artists. In the late 1990s he began visiting antiquarian book fairs in Germany, Zurich, Paris and London, and having enjoyed these experiences immensely he decided to start trading.
Michael’s collecting experience has led to him handling pieces including a private collection of rare invitation cards, flyers and other ephemera of Kunstlerfese including the Reiman School (Berlin/London) and an original rare postcard titled ‘The Sailor’ by Vladimir Tatlin (1885-1953) which he sold to a private collection in Norway. In his extensive current collection he has a selection of works (pictured below) such as:
Heinrich Campendonk (1889-1957) Exlibris of Herwarth Walden, Der Sturm Gallery Berlin. Original hand printed woodcut on japan featuring Walden’s signature.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) Umbra Vitae, Kurt Wolff Verlag, 1924, with original woodcuts.
